      News — SF Store

      10 years

On Friday October 4th, 2002 around 2pm, we took the newspaper off of our windows and opened the doors to our store called Otsu at 3253 16th Street in San Francisco. It's been a long and short ten years since then. Our business has gone through many permutations, from selling vegan shoes and bags and handmade goods and comics, to making artist t-shirts, to having two stores in two different states, to launching a paper goods line and changing our name, to running our store on Valencia from a state away, to being a publisher with just an online shop, to where we are now. Neither of us came from a retail/business background and it's been a matter of organic turns and discoveries and flops and learning on the job. Every year that we celebrate an anniversary is a small victory in itself, but turning ten seems to be a more momentous occasion. It is humbling that we are able to do what we do and take these crazy chances that succeed more often than not--it is a bounty that we are genuinely thankful for.

And of course we would not be where we are today without the help and support of lots of people and we want to express our gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the longevity of our little enterprise: all our customers, all the artists we've worked with, all our vendors, anyone who has ever written about us, our families & friends, George, Kirk, Amara, Alexa, Anna, Crystal, Kate, Lart (happy birthday!), Martine, Tony, Chi-hui, Tommy, Jennie, Dave C., Greg S., Amy & Richard (1984 Printing), Cindy (Favorite Printing), Pat & Aaron, Chad & Emiko, Phil, Yuri, Lauren, David C., Steve & Olivia, Sara O'Sullivan, Creativity Explored, Gabrielle & Andy,  Eun-Ha & Karl, Alissa, Chris D., Dustin, Jason, Jill, Laura & Austin (Pinball), Rita, Kaori, Kristine, Claire, Helen, McSweeney's, Andrew, Dave E., Vendela, Barb, Heidi, Angela, Jordan, Eli, Adam, Greg L., Laura, Chris Y., Brian, Giselle & Phurba.

We don't know what the next ten years will hold, but we hope to keep sharing them with you. Thanks!

SF: Little Otsu Mini Store at Rare Device Grand Opening!

It's finally here, the grand opening of our Mini Store at Rare Device! We are thrilled to be part of this new storefront at 600 Divisadero Street (corner of Hayes) in San Francisco. We will have a mini version of our old Valencia Street store hosted by the good folks of Rare Device in their new location. We're stocking just about all of our Little Otsu line of illustrated books & paper goods as well as old & new favorites from other small publishers and makers.

We'll also be celebrating the release of Living Things Vol. 8 by Jessica Seamans which we'll have on-hand along with some original art from previous Living Things volumes.

The Grand Opening party is Thursday, March 15th from 5-10pm. Please come down and say hi!

      San Francisco: we're coming back!

We have a big announcement today: in conjunction with Rare Device's move to Western Addition in early March, we'll be setting up a mini store in their new space at 600 Divisadero! We all enjoyed our partnership in our pop-up shop at Rare Device this past summer and when the idea arose to team up on something more permanent, it seemed like a natural fit. While we won't be there in-person on a day-to-day basis (we're still living in Portland), we'll be setting up and stocking our own little department within Rare Device which will be a showcase for all of our publishing goods as well as some of our favorite paper goods and crafts from our old Valencia Street shop.

We're very excited to be re-establishing ourselves in a new neighborhood which has some of the old comforts of the Mission. We'll still be a block away from Herbivore and early summer will bring Bi-Rite just a couple doors down. We're still just blocks away from an amazing park (the incomparable Alamo Square--home of those famous Painted Lady victorians for you Full House fans) and there's a bus stop right in front of the store. We'll be smack dab on the corner of Divisadero and Hayes, just down the block from The Independent. It's going to be a new adventure and we can't wait!

The space is still under construction so stay tuned for updates, but we're thrilled to be teaming up with Rare Device and soon having a retail presence back in the city where we started!
